ABSTRACT

Stress A word of more than one syllable is termed a polysyllable. When an English polysyllabic word is said in its citation form (i.e. pronounced in isolation) one strongly stressed syllable will stand out from the rest. This can be indicated by a stress mark [B] placed before the syllable concerned, e.g. Byesterday /Bjestedex/, toBmorrow /teBmbrek/, toBday /teBdex/.
