ABSTRACT
The first country focused on the car itself. Wherever possible a motor car was provided for the learning. The focus was on how it worked, the premise being that there were limited repair resources in the country, so that the more people who were aware of the workings of a car and the basic repairs needed, the more likely it was that the cars would be kept running. The first part of the course focused on the theory of the car: the internal combustion engine, ignition, carburation, hydraulics for the brakes and the clutch, servo mechanisms, electrics, electric motors and alternators, gears, clutch operation, corrosion, tyres and so on. The next step was to focus on the repairs: dirt in the fuel system, punctures, bleeding the brake system, simple bodywork repairs. Finally, in order to enable the learners to have a clearer understanding of the car, the design process was outlined and the learners were required to carry out a simple design producing a cardboard model with at least one working part.
