ABSTRACT

Jewish religious education in Israel to-day is an historical continuation of Jewish education in the past. Traditionally, to promote a religious way of life, instruction was given, mostly to boys—outside of any state establishment and without any comprehensive church organization. A Council for Religious State Education was founded, which advises the Minister of Education and Culture on all affairs of religious state education, which appoints the Director of the Religious Education Division within the Ministry, and which approves curricula for state religious schools. The Council and the Director are authorized to disqualify on religious grounds teachers, principals, and inspectors working in state religious education. Jewish religious education comprises all grades of the educational ladder: kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, teacher training colleges, and even one university. The religious kindergartens as well as religious secondary schools are not directly state institutions.
