ABSTRACT

The Conselho Territorial de Educacao lsraelita has branches in the principal state capitals and cities of Brazil and undertakes the orientation of teaching of religion and Jewish history on lines approved by the state of Israel and other disciplines in conformity with the standards required by the Brazilian authorities. The synod of the Lutheran Church in Rio Grande do Sul State has the following institutions maintained by the church or by local church communities, and there are a small number in other regions. The spiritualists maintain a number of primary schools at their local community centres financed by their members, and in a few cases secondary vocational schools are operated partly financed by fees from students. According to official statistics there were 435 spiritualist schools with 43,000 pupils in the year 1958. A small amount of state aid has been granted to some of these schools.
