ABSTRACT
Functionalism aords a highly abstract conception of the mind. One especially inuential elaboration of this conception depicts minds as symbol processors. To see how this might work, imagine a schematic specication of a functional system resembling the ow chart model deployed in the characterization of organizational hierarchies and computer programs (recall Figures 6.2 and 6.5). Figure 7.1 provides a rough idea of what such a ow chart might look like.
