ABSTRACT

Rod Ellis (2008) of the Center for Applied Linguistics acknowledges that there is much debate regarding best instructional practices for second language acquisition (SLA). Despite this, he believes that the field of SLA needs to offer content-based teachers some guidance when working with ELLs because the task of these teachers is twofold: to teach the curriculum and to provide language instruction in English. Becoming aware of some of the principles related to instruction in SLA will enable teachers to teach ELLs to learn to use English as they interact with classmates and become involved in the academic curriculum. The following principles are not prescriptive and can be used by content-based teachers in any discipline.
