ABSTRACT

In addition to being inclusive of all students, teachers must have the appropriate expectations for all students. Teacher expectations have been proposed as one contributor to the ethnic achievement gap in American schools (Weinstein et al., 2004). According to research conducted by Baron et al. (1985), teachers often expect more from European American and Asian American students than from their African American and Latino classmates. This leads to a disparity in the quality of instruction to which children are exposed. Additionally, students perceive cues about teacher expectations and achieve at the level consistent with the expectation (McKown & Weinstein, 2008).
