ABSTRACT

Middle and high schools often still offer separate skills-based reading instruction for students. The reality is that many middle and high school students have not developed the level of reading skills that they need. Even an average secondary class may have students who are nearly non-readers in the same room with those able to do collegelevel reading. In some schools and classes these poor readers may compose over half the class. Because of this wide range of reading ability among students as well as a number of other factors, some schools require social studies teachers to teach reading for the first 10 or 20 minutes of each class period.
