ABSTRACT

Up to now, we have been talking about aggression as a general construct covering a wide range of different manifestations. In the chapters to come, the focus will shift towards a closer analysis of speci¿ c forms of aggressive behaviour, each carrying its unique characteristics. We shall begin in the present chapter by examining the prevalence and consequences of aggression in four areas of everyday life where it is commonplace, namely in school, at the workplace, on the roads, and in the sports world. Chapter 7 then moves to the protected realm of the family, where aggression is nonetheless a sad reality in the form of sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children, as well as violence against partners and elders. Chapter 8 focuses on sexual aggression, most notably against women, but it will also consider the problem of male sexual victimisation. Chapter 9 will discuss the different forms of aggression and violence that arise from confrontations between social groups, such as gangs, ethnic groups, and mobs. Finally, Chapter 10 will review the growing literature that seeks to understand terrorism as a particular form of group-based aggression.
