ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the first phase of a four-phase event planning model (Figure 3.1), the event development phase. In the discussion of this phase, the event manager is positioned as a facilitator. A definition of facilitation is provided, along with the theory of facilitation. The facilitation role is outlined as guiding the development of the event structures for governance. Theories, including systems theory, contingency theory and complexity theory, are applied to the facilitator’s role.
