ABSTRACT

Undergraduate days at university might be best described as a time when my eyes were opened to viewing the world with a sociological lens as well as a time when I realised what it was that I enjoyed most about tennis. It might be accurate to say that the degree I obtained was unofficially one in Sociology and tennis. Playing tennis during that time rekindled the joy that I had found in it as a child but which had diminished somewhat during my teens when I had been involved in competitive, ratings tournaments. As a child, I had loved going to the park with a friend and just hitting the ball for hours. Sometimes we would play sets, but most of the time we would just hit the ball endlessly. My memories now are of long hot summer days when we would take packed lunches with us so that we did not have to interrupt our sessions by needing to return home, even though we lived only a couple of minutes away.
