ABSTRACT

How big is a group? Are there limits to group size? The answers will depend on the parameters of the task concerned. For example, if the task is to choose a new member of a band/social group/flat-share, etc., then the group working on the task will need to be larger and probably not a friendship group, whereas more personal tasks may be better tackled within a smaller, more intimate, friendship group. Before deciding on group size, parameters need to be identified, such as the need for trust, need for opposing ideas or ability to work as a team. An upper limit is normally six/seven people per group – it is harder for all members to make themselves heard if the group becomes too large.
