ABSTRACT

Contemporary history of the Brazilian Amazon typically follows the history of international and sustainable development that we reviewed in the previous chapter. And ways that its inhabitants’ agency is defined have shifted along this history. 1 In the post-Second World War context, the Brazilian Amazon was integrated into the nation-state building agenda, and the national government promoted modernization of the region by constructing highways and promoting community development based on old catechist communities and colonies. The community members were expected to become citizens of Brazil and contribute to the national economic development.
