ABSTRACT

When I was working on my secondary teaching credential in the early 1970s, I imagined myself introducing students to the beauty and power of literature. My program offered only one methods course—on how to teach the novel—and it encouraged my imagination. Although teaching jobs were scarce back in those days, I landed a position at a local high school, where I learned that I wouldn’t be teaching any literature classes at all. Instead, I was assigned to teach writing.
