ABSTRACT

Like the I Ching and The Book of Songs, The Book of Rites (Li Chi) was composed over centuries and constitutes a sophisticated index of social behaviour. Legge’s deservedly famous translation introduces the reader to the Li Chi: ‘Confucius said, “It is by the Odes that the mind is aroused, by the Rules of Propriety that the character is established, from Music that the finish is received” ’ 1 affirming a view that these foundational texts accomplish a seamless task.
