ABSTRACT
In 1979 ships spilled about 3,200,000 metric tons of oil into the sea, over three-quarters of it deliberately – mainly when de-ballasting, washing out oil tanks and during regular maintenance such as pumping out the bilges (Cuisine and Grant, 1980).
