ABSTRACT

Recognition of the role of sustainability in assisting early childhood education and the important role it plays in caring for the natural environment, lays the foundations for assisting children to develop an appreciation and understanding of environmental limits. Whilst the intent of achieving sustainability in planning for design and implementation particularly during the design stages is less clearly understood in terms of physical environment its role in underpinning effective practices has been less readily conveyed. The outdoor play space setting has a vital role to enable children to learn about sustainability. Maintenance of the physical environment is vital to ensure the long-term viability of any outdoor play space. Poor maintenance can inhibit the purpose of the playground, especially when it limits and inhibits children carrying out their play ideas. Effective planning and implementation of a playground underpins how easy to be maintain. The inclusion and placement of water supply systems needs to be considered carefully.
