Sustainability: its nature and development as a concept and emergence in event management

This chapter is the first of two looking at sustainability and sustainable management. It looks at the more theoretical and developmental aspects of the term while Chapter 9 focuses on practicalities, though there is an inevitable overlap. This chapter aims to:

examine the development of ideas on sustainability and their political, cultural and social context;

trace the evolution of the idea within event academe and the event industry;

note the strand of green meetings;

explore the scope of sustainable protocols, principles and policies; and

evaluate aspects of the implementation of BS 8901 in the UK.
