ABSTRACT

Many professionals in what has come to be known as the legacy media—old media, including longstanding print-based publications—continue to reel from the disruptions caused by the digital revolution. Despite all the hand-wringing about change, the explosion of websites and tablet editions of traditional magazines can provide some great opportunities for emerging writers. New media provide a wealth of opportunities to establish a publishing track record. While few of these digital outlets pay as well as their older, more established print counterparts (many, in fact, do not pay at all), they offer an entrée into a media world that once was closed to all but a select few who were invited to join the magazine writing club.
