From the outset it must be acknowledged that many people come to the subject of reproductive technologies with particular expectations and priorities, and that it is a subject which touches on so many precious and complex beliefs and values - about motherhood, rationality, the sanctity of life; about paternity, sex, and the origins of humanity - that it is impossible in one chapter to address all of the concerns which it raises. Further, as a place where motherhood meets science, and where reproductive rights become a more challenging concept and reality, it can hardly be discussed without offending someone's sensibilities. I find myself bruising my own sensibilities at times.
