ABSTRACT

Arguably the most important contemporary linguistic theory over the past two decades, Cognitive Linguistics has had a profound impact on our understanding about language including its use and acquisition. In recent years, it has also begun to have a significant influence on language teaching. This chapter offers a discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of Cognitive Linguistics (including its key concepts) and an examination of the unique features of Cognitive Linguistics-inspired language descriptions as well as its value and potential for enhancing the effectiveness of language teaching.
