ABSTRACT

The final chapter on word classes explores the role of verbs, adjectives and adverbs. As with all the other word classes, the familiar definition based on meaning is developed by concentrating on the function of each type of word. Activities use the four tests to develop pupils’ understanding of the recommended terminology for these word classes. This knowledge is applied to awareness of language variation and change, including differences between standard and non-standard English; and degrees of formality. Verbs play more complex roles than other word classes, changing form in several ways to express a variety of meanings. The terminology for classifying types of verbs is extensive and may become daunting. For this reason, it is introduced in stages.
