ABSTRACT

Following the principles of the cognitive model for voices and social rank theory described in Chapter 1, and our distinctive goals for research and practice outlined in Chapter 2, we developed cognitive behaviour therapy for command hallucinations (CBT for CH). We designed CBT for CH principally to enable clients to regain a sense of control over their actions by challenging the omnipotence of their voices, to reduce compliance by disconfirming the belief in severe consequences (e.g. belief that the voice will harm the client if they resist), and, most importantly, to ease distress associated with resistance. In this chapter we outline the CBT for CH procedure and illustrate it with a case study. We begin with the assessment stage.
