ABSTRACT
Is today’s China similar to pre-World War I Germany? Will China challenge the international system and US supremacy violently after it becomes powerful? This chapter, through examining British-German interactions at international, domestic, societal, and individual levels during the years between Germany’s unification and the outbreak of World War I, attempts to shed light on what went wrong in the European power transition and what the United States and China can learn from the tragedy.
