ABSTRACT
Life in early Britain was not easy. Being born was hard enough; survival was even more difficult. But if girls managed to get through the dangerous years from birth to five, they were likely to reach maturity. Their next hurdle was to survive the childbearing years, to live in good health to what might be considered a reasonably old age. The final achievement was, at death, to be honoured and mourned by those left behind.
