ABSTRACT
During my recent visits to Calcutta, I have often spent time in a bookstore on College Street looking through books and chatting with the owner Mr. Dasgupta. In one of our conversations about old houses in Calcutta, he said, “You must see our old house, particularly the thakurghar (room for worship). It’s a thakurghar of olden days – marvelous!”1
