ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the lexical origin of the term fitrah and its implications with regard to the relationship between the Creator and His creations, the universe, life and man, explores the conceptual relationship of fitrah to sovereignty (hakimiyyah), servitude (‘ubudiyyah) and the universality of Islam, and overall the theory of society. This will be followed by a discussion of the socio-political and religious connotations of the given conceptions and their bearing on the Islamic theory of human nature.
