ABSTRACT

Like al-fitrah, the concept of al-‘aql (human intellect) is one of the important conceptual tools that Qutb has used to articulate his socio-political theory. This section investigates Qutb’s concept of human intellect or in his words – al-‘aql as it relates to the concept of Sovereignty (hakimiyyah) and other of Qutb’s comprehensive constructs such as ‘ubudiyyah (servitude), the universality of Islam and, overall, the confrontational theory which expounds Qutb’s view on the jahili predominance in the world. Rationality and the relationship of human intellect (al-‘aql) to Revelation (al-wahy) are also examined in the context of Qur’anic text (nass), and then to various other concepts, such as the universe, humanity and life, including the socio-political realm.
