ABSTRACT

Augustine’s famous conversion took place in Milan, under the tutelage of Ambrose (339-397), Bishop of Milan – and, according to Augustine himself, as a result of the incessant prayers of his mother. Agonizing in a garden over his lack of faith and inability to renounce worldly pursuits for a spiritual life, Augustine heard the voice of a child crying out to him “Take it and read, take it and read.”2 Opening a Bible at Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, Augustine read: “Go home and sell all that belongs to you. Give to the poor, and so the treasure you have shall be in heaven; then come back and follow me” (Rom 13:13-14). His life was forever changed, as was Christianity.
