ABSTRACT

It’s a condition of being an English teacher, whether in training or in post, that you want to be better. There are areas of your practice (perhaps the use of learning objectives, evaluation, differentiation, teaching drama or approaching Shakespeare) where you would like to improve; but it’s also a condition of the job that you don’t have much if any time for reading theoretical texts. This book, which is rooted in the practice of good English teaching, sets out directly and personally to provide a readable and practical resource based on extensive experience of teaching and training teachers. It moves between example and principle, drawing out fundamentals through specifics and anecdotes. It can be read from start to finish or dipped into for direct, illustrated advice on issues in your own work or training. It’s easy to read, occasionally comical, and consistently serious.
