ABSTRACT

Since language is the key vehicle for the expression of ideology, the analysis of corpus data lends itself to this area of research. This chapter explores in more detail how the electronic analysis of texts can aid the study of ideology. In the previous chapter we have seen how the study of point of view in narrative fiction may be complemented with an investigation of semantic prosodies of individual lexical items and phrases. The same technique has been used to analyse the manifestation of ideology in everyday spoken and written discourse and particular reference will be made to the concept of semantic prosody during this chapter. It has a particular place in the study of ideology, as it facilitates the description of individual words and phrases in terms of their positive or negative shading.
