ABSTRACT

Electronic text analysis has had a considerable effect on the area of language teaching and a number of the large corpora funded by publishing houses were built with the aim of facilitating corpus-based lexicography to inform English language teaching dictionaries and grammars. These include, amongst others, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the Collins COBUILD Learner’s Dictionary and the Macmillan English Dictionary. Similarly, new grammars of English have been designed based on corpus evidence, such as the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English for example.
