ABSTRACT

A well-developed self-awareness is the first step in being emotionally intelligent (and there is much more on self-awareness in Chapters 10-14). In the context of teaching, before you consider using emotionally intelligent strategies, it is especially important to be aware of how you tend to relate to groups of learners. This is because the way in which you relate to your learners will:

• have an immediate effect on how they feel about being in the session – it will affect the emotional environment (see more on this in Chapter 3);

• influence your learners’ perception of how they should behave in the session and of the roles available to them;

• set the parameters for your own use of emotional intelligence.
