ABSTRACT

Your response will almost certainly have considered what the child said in relation to the whole situation: in other words you will have considered aspects of language use in context. That context includes what the child did as well as what other people did and you might have wondered whether rubbing the chin communicated anything. Many people feel reasonably comfortable in arguing that language and communication do not have the same meaning. However, many would be less confident if they were asked to specify the difference between the two. What do you think is the difference in meaning and use of the two terms? Activity 1.1 should help you clarify your thoughts.
