ABSTRACT

When war broke out on 4 August 1914 women formed around 30 per cent of the workforce in England and Wales. In Scotland, it was nearer 25 per cent.10 The number of women recognized as workers had increased since the beginning of the century and as we have seen in the previous chapter, the scope of women’s work had widened, especially for middle and lower middle-class women. However, we have also noted that despite the widening opportunities and rising numbers of women participating in paid work, women were segregated into sectors which offered lower pay and less possibility of promotion.
