      ABSTRACT

The first real test of the new legislation came with Penguin’s 1960 paperback edition of D.H.Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Mervyn Griffith-Jones for the prosecution famously inquired of the jury, ‘Is this a book that you would…wish your wife or your servants to read?’ Having heard all the evidence, the jury answered in the affirmative and Lady Chatterley went on to sell 2 million copies for Penguin in the next two years, spearheading the ‘Paperback Revolution’ whereby the book-reading public bought rather than borrowed their reading matter.
