ABSTRACT

The number of middle-class Blacks has increased significantly since the civil rights movement of the 1960s. When Blacks become middle class, they frequently move from the central area of the city to the suburbs. Between 1960 and 1977, the number of Black suburban residents increased 71.8 percent. In 1977, 18.8 percent of Blacks were suburban residents (Lake, 1981). In 1981, 1 out of every 5 Blacks lived in the suburbs (Carlson, 1981).
