ABSTRACT
Having surveyed the basic story told by normative Judaism, we now take up the basic history of that Judaism. The one comes from a participant, the other, an observer from the outside. Chapters 2 through 7 tell the story as it is told by participants in normative Judaism. Here and in the following chapters, we review the story as it is told by outsiders, specifically by historians of religion.
