ABSTRACT

In the realm of pathogen research, control and oversight fall into two interrelated categories. The first, biosafety, is about measures and procedures for protecting the health and safety of people working in laboratories and preventing the accidental release of pathogens into the environment. The second category, biosecurity, concerns measures for preventing theft and illegal use of pathogens, such as for the production of BW. Laboratories around the world have undertaken biosafety measures for decades. By contrast, the notion of biosecurity is relatively new, having arisen mainly because of concerns about the deliberate misuse of pathogenic micro-organisms.
