ABSTRACT

Living with domestic violence and abuse changes lives whatever the material context (Jones et al. 2001; Humphreys and Joseph 2004). Discourses of domestic violence and abuse have enabled women living with violent partners to identify and name their experiences and to realise they are not alone (Humphreys and Thiara 2003; Faramarzi et al. 2005). Discourses of domestic violence have regulated the behaviours of women, violent men and the health, social care and law enforcement professionals across the areas circumscribed within the regulatory discourses (Ferraro 1996; Bettman 2009; Murray and Powell 2009).
