ABSTRACT

Knowledge work, an essential activity in the new economy, whether we believe in it or not, driven and enabled by information and communications technologies (lCT) , has resulted in drastic changes in work organisation and in workplace provisions. Various workplace arrangements, space support and utilisation strategies have accommodated these changes. But are these strategies relevant for the knowledge workplace? We conducted an extensive review of literature on workplaces and concentrated our search to workplace literacy. We begin to understand that knowledge workplaces must support the different modes of communication in knowledge exchange, inter-and intra-organisationally, at all operating levels through the full range of space allocation options, from dedicated assignments to free address allocation. This guidance should assist facilities management in planning for workplaces so as to fill the spectrum of diversity requirements among knowledge workers.
