ABSTRACT
This section outlines the learning outcomes that ELLs typically accomplish in differing ESOL programs and the importance of the maintenance of first language development. Although school systems differ across the United States in the ways in which they try to deal with ELL populations, this chapter describes the pedagogical pros and cons of an array of ESOL programs and clarifies terminology used in the field.
