ABSTRACT
On a first reading of the Republic, going from Book 9 to Book 10 resembles turning off a highway to wind along twisted back roads. After a two-book-long strategy for comparing justice to injustice, which ties up the elaborate argument spanning the dialogue as a whole, comes a bag of arguments about the arts, apparently unconnected with one another or with Books 1–9.
