ABSTRACT

We begin this chapter facing head-on the ethical dilemma posed to therapists considering whether conjoint couple therapy ever has a place when working with clients impacted by IPV. We illustrate this dilemma with a case study and review ethical principles to guide therapists in making this determination. Following this overview of the complexities of this topic, we delve into the surrounding controversies, strategies for addressing safety concerns, and approaches described in the literature, including the research basis for their effectiveness.
