ABSTRACT

One of the powerful themes in Chapter 4 is that ethics are not just matters of individual decisions and behaviour, but are interwoven with social values and social living. Our codes of behaviour are learned from others and with others, put into practice in social contexts, and have consequences for other individuals and for society in general. This goes back to one of the key pairings discussed in Chapter 1, the relationship between the individual and society. This chapter adds more angles to that topic, linking it with ideas about freedom and the role of the law.
