ABSTRACT
In this chapter we look at what we know about how language develops, and how this can be applied to the learning environment so that it provides the optimum conditions for talking and listening.
First, let me tell you about Derwentwater primary school in Ealing, which exemplified for me what we mean by ‘a place to talk’ more than any other setting I visited.
