ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The main purpose of this book is to allow teachers’ own voices to provide insights into the professional lives of Chinese English language teachers who received their training in the west or at other overseas institutions that emphasize western-based teaching approaches. The second purpose of this book is to provide a case study of Chinese teacher’s efforts to localize their western education for use in Chinese classrooms. The book focuses on the impact on their professional lives of the Chinese English language teacher’s western education. The book is important for two reasons. First, it provides an in-depth look into the empowering but also challenging impact of Western education on Chinese English language teaching professionals who return home. The second purpose of this book is to provide a case study of Chinese teachers’ efforts to localize their Western education for use in Chinese classrooms.
