ABSTRACT

The chapter provides new goals for Chinese education and emphasizes the importance of teacher education, in particular the need to increase the number of teachers and to improve the instructional efficiency of primary and secondary schools. In the past decade, fewer and fewer foreign institutions and foundations have included China as one of the countries that receive their scholarships owing to the rapid expansion of the economic development of the country. Applicants seeking Chinese scholarship council (CSC) sponsorship for PhD degree programs should be accepted into CSC-approved doctoral programs before they apply for scholarships. The Chinese English language teachers, as government-sponsored scholarships, are the most accessible, although there are numerous funding programs from other sources including from private donors, corporations, and foundations. Nevertheless, despite the difficulties of returning home after an extended time abroad, many return to the middle kingdom to be welcomed home as wizened sea turtles.
