ABSTRACT
The polar regions – comprising the Antarctic and Arctic – are characterized by their remoteness, inhospitable climate, distinctive biological systems and, until recently, perceived limited economic utility. Yet, while similar in climate, the Antarctic and Arctic regions differ from each other in almost all other respects, including governance, patterns of human use and oceanographic structure.
