ABSTRACT

Does humanity live by bread alone, or are we dependent on Nature in other ways? In particular, are there social, cultural, psychological and spiritual ways we depend on Nature? There are a whole range of non-material values we derive from Nature, and they can be categorized in different ways. Nature has social, cultural, educational and recreational values to humanity, so I will cover these first. However, Nature also has other key values that can be described as psychological or spiritual, and I will cover these next. I will then touch on the ‘sense of wonder's we feel toward Nature, that encapsulates many of the above. I will also often refer to ‘wilderness's or wild places as ways of discussing the non-material values that Nature provides us. This is not to say that Nature does not provide these in less wild places (for it does), merely that they are more obvious in wild places.
